CelcomDigi and SK Telecom sign MoU to develop Malaysia’s Metaverse Ecosystem

PETALING JAYA, 1 MARCH 2023 – CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi) and SK Telecom, South Korea’s leading wireless telecommunications operator, have sealed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore and develop Malaysia’s first operator-led mobile metaverse platform. Under the MoU, CelcomDigi and SKT will create new business opportunities by working together to develop and offer metaverse and artificial intelligence (AI) use cases optimized for the Malaysian market, via CelcomDigi’s Innovation Center.  

Leveraging from edge computing processes for best latency experience, the development of Malaysia’s first operator led Mobile Metaverse Platform will also enable the co-creation and unlocking of new Metaverse content and services for customers and businesses in Malaysia. CelcomDigi and SK Telecom will explore creating Metaverse services in various verticals such as education, health, retail, and entertainment, contributing to the development of Malaysia’s Metaverse Ecosystem.  

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the Mobile World Congress 2023 in Barcelona by Datuk Idham Nawawi, Chief Executive Officer of CelcomDigi Berhad and Young-sang Ryu, Chief Executive Officer of SK Telecom.  

Commenting on the collaboration, CelcomDigi CEO Datuk Idham Nawawi said “We are excited to collaborate with the leading global ICT company, SK Telecom for the development of Malaysia’s Metaverse ecosystem. The collaboration puts us at the forefront of developing innovative Metaverse services for Malaysians by leveraging on the latest technology, including 5G. This collaboration is part of our journey towards becoming the top telco-tech company in Malaysia and we aim to collaborate with more local organisations to co-create innovative use-cases that will spur growth within the nation’s digital economy.”

Ryu Youngsang, CEO of SK Telecom said, “As we advance into the global market with our metaverse platform ifland, major telecommunications companies in the Southeast Asian countries and region play an important role as our partners.
