CelcomDigi completes first two consolidated network clusters in East Malaysia

July 27, 2023
  • 50 network sites consolidated to better serve customers in Tuaran and Menggatal, Sabah
  • CelcomDigi’s network integration and modernisation exercise ahead of schedule

PETALING JAYA, 27 JULY 2023 – CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi) announced today the completion of the first two consolidated network clusters in Tuaran and Menggatal, Sabah. 50 Celcom and Digi network sites have been successfully consolidated to a total of 108 sites across Tuaran and Menggatal, providing its customers within the area with better download throughput, higher capacity for data traffic, and wider LTE coverage and quality.

CelcomDigi recently commenced its full-scale programme to build Malaysia’s future digital network – integrating and modernising the largest 4G network in Malaysia with the latest LTE and 5G-ready technologies. This marks one of the largest network deployment projects in the country involving a total of 18,000 sites, following the successful merger of Celcom and Digi in December 2022.

CelcomDigi is integrating and modernising its network by clusters, with activities focused on coverage and capacity expansion efforts, upgrading sites with the latest 4G and 5G-ready technologies, as well as streamlining overlapping sites to eliminate duplication. To date, the company has completed integration work in 19 clusters across Central, Northern, Southern, Eastern, and East Malaysia regions. The programme is on track and all upgrades were managed with minimal disruption to customers.

Upon completion of the network integration and modernisation exercise, the new network will offer customers a significantly elevated quality of experience, improving reach from 96% to 98% of populated areas nationwide.

As per its Q1 2023 earnings report, the company plans to re-invest 15% to 18% of total revenue in CAPEX to support both the network integration and modernisation programme and to support both existing Celcom and Digi networks. It plans to keep the strong pace of integration execution to complete the network exercise within the next two and a half to three years.
