How much do Malaysians know about data privacy – CelcomDigi aims to find out

May 5, 2025

Findings to identify gaps, guide development of user-focused privacy features and targeted awareness, and support advocacy.

PETALING JAYA, 5 MAY 2025 – As Malaysia rolls out major updates to Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act in 2025, it is crucial for citizens to understand the basics of privacy, their rights and ways to manage their personal data. Mindful of this need, CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi) today launched its comprehensive National Privacy Awareness Survey 2025.

The survey aims to measure public knowledge and understanding on various privacy matters, including consumer confidence in the way businesses manage personal data. Data and insights obtained from this survey will help policymakers, regulators, businesses, and consumer advocates identify gaps in awareness, tailor education campaigns, and strengthen data protection practices to better address public concerns and build greater trust in Malaysia’s evolving privacy landscape.

Targeting to gather 10,000 responses from Malaysians aged 18 and above, the survey will be conducted through various channels including universities and the internet centres known as National Information Dissemination Centres (NaDi) managed by CelcomDigi.

CelcomDigi Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Joachim Rajaram said, “As digital interactions become a central part of everyday life, protecting privacy and personal data is more critical than ever. This initiative is a significant step in fostering Malaysians’ trust in our digital future. When consumers understand the basics of privacy, their rights, and the changing privacy landscape, they are better equipped to protect themselves. With insufficient latest data on privacy awareness in Malaysia, the findings from this survey would provide actionable insights for the entire ecosystem – the government, data and governance professionals, academicians, and businesses – to ensure that we have mature and robust frameworks while promoting greater privacy awareness and advocacy.”
