CelcomDigi’s Scam Awareness Survey probes public understanding of scam

February 5, 2024
  • Nationwide survey in collaboration with internet centres aims to gauge level of public knowledge and understanding of scams
  • Findings to guide development of more strategic and holistic efforts to increase scam awareness

PETALING JAYA, 5 February 2024 – Based on the latest Ipsos report, 76% of Malaysians have encountered and been targeted by scams at one point in their lives; records from the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) reported that over RM1.34 billion was lost to scammers in 2023. In efforts to ramp up more effective and targeted awareness initiatives, CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi) is launching a Scam Awareness Survey to gauge the public’s general knowledge of scams and related prevention methods.

Commencing on 6 February 2024 in conjunction with Safer Internet Day, the survey will be held in collaboration with 307 internet centres known as Pusat Ekonomi Digital (PEDi) managed by CelcomDigi. The survey targets to gather 10,000 responses from Malaysians aged 18 and above.

According to CelcomDigi’s Head of Sustainability Philip Ling, “As scammers grow increasingly advanced in endangering the wellbeing of Malaysians, we want to optimise our resources and network to drive stronger visibility and preparedness against the threats of scams. Findings from this survey is crucial for us to tailor educational initiatives that can address specific gaps in scam awareness while creating more targeted campaigns for the community. Additionally, the findings will also be insightful for policymakers and enforcement agencies to enhance collective actions in the war against scams.

Striving to do business responsibly, CelcomDigi is guided by the simple principle to ACT - to create Awareness, drive high Compliance across the business while supporting efforts of enforcement agencies, and leverage Technology to combat cybercrimes and build relevant safeguards for Malaysians.

Apart from this survey, the company has been a driving force in promoting a safer internet experience for all Malaysians, from kickstarting a joint nationwide roadshow Jelajah Anti-Scam Kebangsaan in 2023, conducting a series of SAFE @Schools digital safety talks to creating a one-stop SAFE Internet educational resource page for the public to easily access and download digital safety materials.

CelcomDigi’s Scam Awareness Survey is accessible HERE and will be closed on 15 March 2024.
