CelcomDigi partners Malaysiakini to ramp up scam awareness via new online game

New online game that simulates real scam tactics that users face and help learn how to protect themselves

PETALING JAYA, 30 June 2025 – What would you do if offered a high-paying job that seems too good to be true? Or if someone you’ve never met online suddenly asks for money? These are just some of the high-stakes scenarios Malaysians will face in a new interactive online scam simulation developed by CelcomDigi Berhad (“CelcomDigi”) and Malaysiakini.

Hosted on Kini News Lab portal’s interactive feature, Can you escape online scams? simulation immerses users in five real-world scam types — job scams, investment scams, love scams, mule account scams, and scam calls — challenging them to think critically, spot red flags and make decisions under pressure, just as victims do in real life.

The initiative is part of CelcomDigi’s ongoing efforts to raise scam and online safety awareness amongst Malaysians and commitment in building a trusted digital society. Through partnerships with media, behavioural experts, and community advocates, the company is reaching diverse segments of society with relevant, accessible content. These collective efforts reflect the company’s long-term commitment to fostering a more informed, vigilant, and resilient digital society.

CelcomDigi Head of Sustainability Philip Ling said, “While we ensure that Malaysians enjoy the benefits of digital connectivity, we also recognise that we face a reality where scams and fraud have become one of the most pressing social epidemics today. People often think ‘it won’t happen to me’ — until it does. This simulation is meant to shake that mindset. By stepping into the shoes of a potential victim, Malaysians can learn how scams really work, test how well we can spot a scam, and more importantly, how to stop them. Our goal is simple — help people stay safe by making awareness more relatable, accessible, and impactful.”

Alongside the simulation, the awareness page features gripping stories from real scam victims and survivors, provides warning signs to look out for, and clear steps to take when faced with a potential scam situation.

All Malaysians can test their scam knowledge and instincts in the simulation here.
