PETALING JAYA, 28 February 2024 – CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi) and GSMA, today inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore the implementation of a global, open, interoperable, federated GSMA Open Gateway, enabling seamless universal connectivity and other technical capabilities for telco services, emerging immersive virtual services, and other advanced digital services that will benefit Malaysian consumers and businesses.
The MoU was signed by Datuk Idham Nawawi, Chief Executive Officer of CelcomDigi, in the presence of Henry Calvert, Senior Director, Head of Network 2020 GSMA and Julian Gorman, Head of APAC for GSMA, together with the industry and witnessed by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman, Tan Sri Mohamad Salim bin Fateh Din.
GSMA’s Open Gateway initiative puts in place a framework of common network APIs designed to provide enterprise developers and global cloud companies with universal access to operator networks. CelcomDigi’s Innovation Centre aims to accelerate the growth of digital services such as fraud detection, geo-location, carrier billing, and the metaverse solutions for enterprises and businesses in Malaysia with open-source frameworks.
The GSMA Open Gateway initiative was launched in February 2023 by the mobile industry and the GSMA – a global association uniting mobile operators, technology firms, and related industries. Some 42 mobile operator groups worldwide, representing 237 mobile networks and 65% of global connections worldwide, are now part of the GSMA Open Gateway initiative.
“I’m delighted to see Malaysia’s mobile operators join the global GSMA Open Gateway initiative,” said Julian Gorman, Head of Asia Pacific, GSMA. “Asia-Pacific represents the largest mobile market in the world and with more operators taking part in this initiative, together we can create, enhance, and bring new digital services and immersive technologies to market faster and to a wider global customer base.”
“In the same way we helped harmonize mobile voice services and enable roaming 35 years ago, I believe GSMA Open Gateway offers huge potential to unlock further value from mobile connectivity and deliver similar, significant levels of change for digital services. It’s wonderful that Malaysia will be part of this,” he added.
